This month’s common myth!

Is it true that an intact hymen "proves" virginity?

When it comes to sex, there are loads of fascinating taboos and myths that have been circulating for ages! One of the most widespread myths is: "If you're a vagina owner and a virgin, the hymen will be intact." While this might be true in some cases, having an intact hymen doesn't necessarily prove virginity or the lack thereof.

First off, let's learn what the hymen is. The hymen is a soft, elastic, thin piece of membranous tissue that surrounds part of the vaginal opening. Interestingly, the hymen doesn't serve any specific biological function. Over time, often during puberty when hormones are constantly changing, the hymen starts to thin and become even more elastic than before. With the thinning and increased elasticity its very easy for the hymen to tear, or "break".

Some people think that if the hymen is torn, it means someone isn't a virgin, but that's not always the case. The hymen is super thin, so it can easily tear or "break" when there's pressure. This can happen from pressure inside or outside the body. Notice how it's all about the pressure, not about something being inserted.

When the hymen tears, some people might experience a bit of pain or light bleeding, while others don't feel a thing. There are tons of activities that can cause the tissue to tear. Activities you might not expect, like using tampons, having a pelvic exam, riding a bike, or even horse riding, can cause it to tear. Now, I know what you're thinking—what about sex?! Yes, absolutely, sex can cause it to tear just as easily, but it's important to realize that's not the only way, and it's less common than you might think.

Talking about sex, it's important to understand that just because the hymen can tear due to sex, doesn't mean it will. A person can have sex multiple times and still have an intact hymen afterwards. Well, how is that possible if it can tear when pressure is applied? Think of the hymen like a water balloon. As you fill the balloon with water, it will expand, causing the material to become increasingly thin as it stretches. You can fill the water balloon so full that the second it drops or hits someone, it bursts open. Or maybe you didn't add quite as much water, so the balloon isn't stretched quite as much, and you might have to throw it a few times to get it to pop. The way the balloon stretches is similar to the hymen. The elasticity and amount of force or pressure will all influence when and how the balloon will burst.

Now that we understand what is happening, let's jump back up to why we're here, "Is it true that an intact hymen "proves" virginity? Absolutely not! While someone may have an intact hymen, we've just reviewed that doesn't prove anything. Every person is different and every body will experience this at different times and for different reasons. There is no way to "prove" virginity other than trusting the person you are speaking with.

This month’s top question from you!

Why are there so many more toys for vulva owners than penis owners?

It's easy to assume that there are more toys for vulva owners rather than toys for penis owners, but often times it's just the way something is advertised. Toys are often marketed to one demographic or another, but just because a toy is marketed towards a certain group doesn't mean they're the only ones who can or will want to use it. There are tons of options and many things to think about when deciding on what toy you want. Do you want something with suction? Vibration? Air pulsation? High or low intensity? These are all important questions to figure out what's right for you. There's no toy that's "better" than another, just ones that suit you better. Toys are all about pleasure, and who doesn't want that? Choosing a toy is all about what you or your partner(s) will enjoy the most.

When it comes to toy design, in reality there are way more options for those with penises. Think about it. Who can use anal plugs? Anyone. What about a vibrator? Yep, anyone again. Nipple clamps? You got it— most everyone's got nipples! People with penises can use these just as much as those with vulvas. But, penis owners also have toys like strokers, cock rings, and head teasers. Vulva owners might use a head teaser to add some texture to another toy or their hand, but strokers aren't really their thing.

Lots of toys are marketed for a specific activity or gender, but that doesn't mean you have to follow that—it's just a suggestion. Marketing is everywhere, and just because something's aimed at one group doesn't mean others won't want or use it. For example, when you go to buy razors, you see pink "women's" razors or "men's" blue ones. Which do you pick? Don't they work the same? The difference is really just the marketing. Sure, there are two colors, but they're just razors. Similarly, toys are often marketed to either a male or female audience. If a toy is sold as a vibrating G-Spot stimulator, does that mean a penis owner can't use it? Nope! A G-Spot stimulator might be perfect as a prostate massager like the Bang! 10X G Spot Vibrator. Toys are meant for everyone.

When it comes to why there are more toys for vulva owners than penis owners, what do you think? Did you realize there might be more options than you thought? Marketing influences us all, but keeping an open mind and finding creative ways to use toys, even if that's not what they were "designed" for, is part of the fun. Whether you're masturbating or having sex, it's all about having a good time, and toys can make it even better. Toys are made for pleasure, and just because something wasn't designed for a specific activity or gender doesn't mean you can't use it that way—you might just find a new favorite way to enjoy it.

We hope to help you and your partner(s) learn, grow, and enjoy together. Please submit your questions and we would love to be able to help answer them! Check back next month to see if others are wondering the same.

XOXO~Sasha
